  • Waffles

Okay, it’s 2:30 am and I should be fast asleep because our church is having a holiday breakfast in 7 hours. Instead, I’ve been dilly dallying on facebook and Kingdom of Loathing (does anyone here play??). I know y’all miss my blogging so I’ll write about the wonderful meal I will soon enjoy…

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. It’s hard to pick just one meal, but it makes sense that I would pick breakfast because I love sweets! And for me, anything sweet can count as breakfast – cookies, brownies, scones, muffins, cake, pie, the list goes on.

The BEST breakfast food? Waffles. Crisp on the outside, fluffy and light on the inside. Sorry to all you pancake lovers, but waffles are wayyyy wayyyyyy better.

Pumpkin waffles!!! My roommate from college made these for me when I visited her last week.

They tasted just as good as they look in these photos. YUM! :)

When I was living in LA I would make waffles all the time and eat them with strawberries and whipped cream. We have a waffle maker at home but whenever my mom makes them, they come out dense and hard. I don’t know if it’s the batter or the machine. I need to figure it out!

p.s. Related anecdote – waffles were the first food I was able to prepare all by myself. I distinctly remember putting Eggo waffles in the toaster when I was in elementary school and eating them in the living room with butter and syrup. I was so proud of myself for fixing breakfast without the help of an adult. ^.^

  • My Holiday Wish List

Warning: This is a long, rambling post on material STUFF.

My family and friends have been asking me what I want for Christmas, and it was kind of surprising how difficult it was for me to actually come up with a wish list. Like, if someone handed me $500 and told me to spend it RIGHT AWAY on whatever I wanted… well, I’d probably get something camera related. In fact, I just ordered an imaginary cart full of photography goodies from Amazon. But I wouldn’t want to receive business related gifts all the time. My life isn’t ALL about work!!

Ryan is very practical when it comes to gifts. His idea of thoughtfulness means giving a gift that I need. Last Christmas he gave me a Velbon Carbon Fiber Tripod. For my 21st birthday, I received a 50mm compact macro lens and a set of Holga filters. Over the years, I’ve gotten an 8GB CF memory card, Logitech G500 Gamer Mouse (LOL, as if I play Starcraft on a regular basis!), a CD player alarm clock… you get the idea. The gifts really ARE useful and it’s nice to think of him whenever I use them.

Given that all the presents I receive from him on special occasions are usually black and plastic, it explains why I get so excited when he flips a switch and goes into that sweet romantic mode. It happens randomly – roses in the mail, a pack of rainbow sharpies (okay, still somewhat practical, but I wanted it for fun), a pretty little dessert from a local bakery.

Anyway. I already know what he got me for Christmas this year. He handed it to me a few days ago and tricked me into opening it. It is very cool, very high tech, and very relevant to my business. And likewise, he knows what I’m giving him. I’ve found that “romantic” surprises aren’t as successful as buying him exactly what he asks for – in this case, a pair of Shure SE530 headphones from Todd the Vinyl Junkie. They’re sitting in a cardboard USPS box next to my desk. I can’t decide if I should even bother wrapping it… he didn’t wrap my gift. -____-

Funny enough, my dad is the exact same way. He asked me what I wanted for Christmas (strongly implying that he would only buy me something for my camera), then told me to order it for myself on Amazon with his credit card. I half joked about how he wasn’t even really getting it for me since I was the one placing the order. He then asked me if it was truly necessary for him to walk over to my laptop and press the “submit order” button. LOL.

Now that I’m getting a whole new set of camera gear/computer equipment from Ryan and my dad, I’ve been thinking about what I would like to buy for myself. Myself as in Fern the girly girl, not Fern the working professional. ^.^

    wish list numbers

    From top to bottom:
    1. Coach Riley Op Art Picture Frame Keyring, $30 – Sooo cute!! I currently do not have any key chains and this keyring comes in lots of stylish colors and designs. I want to collect them.
    2. Everyday Bag by NzLbags, $80 – Handmade and girly! It’s like everything I would want in a sweater, except in the form of a bag. Hahaha.
    3. Reminder Bow Ring, by boe, $38 – My friend Marisa bought this in Hawaii and it is an awful lot cheaper than the platinum diamond version at Tiffany & Co.
    4. B. Makowsky Lavender Washington Satchel Handbag, $189 – My mom gave me a lilac B. Makowsky handbag that I used until it got badly stained all over. This shall be the replacement. :D
    5. Coach Op Art Cupcake Keyring, $38 – Yep, it’s another super cute Coach keychain. I don’t know if you noticed but I really like cupcakes. And Coach. lol
    6. B. Makowsky Classics Astor Satchel, $238 – Another fashionable handbag from one of my favorite brands!
    7. Botanical Earrings in gold by joojooland, $25-$38 – Simple and delicate.

They’re all the same type of things. I didn’t really look at clothes or shoes… maybe I’ll make another wish list?

  • Listen Up, Ladies and Gentlemen

“What women should know: a man who truly loves you will never let you go no matter how hard the situation is. What men should know: a woman who truly loves you will get angry at you for so many things but will still stick around.”

    Hahahahaha.

    Yep.

  • Fluffy Things

Yeah I know I already posted about my teddy bear but I thought he deserved a REAL portrait. Like the kind NOT taken with a webcam. Annnnnnd I love my cuddly new sweater!! *cuddle cuddle* Ryan didn’t seem to care/notice. Whatever, his loss, I can hug myself and enjoy the fluffiness.

    IMG_1619-1
I guess you can’t see it much in this photo… but I’m sure you can tell how soft it is!

It has an open neckline, perfect for that effortlessly cute off-the-shoulder look. I’m kind of obsessed. Oh retail therapy… thank you for brightening my less-than-ideal week. (I made a cool phrase to describe the mood I was in. Ready? Ready?? I was in a “gloomy slump” LOL.)

  • To my Mormon Friend

    Hey Anthony,

I have been sitting in my room thinking about how incredibly blessed I am, and how I want to express that to the world. That train of thought led me to you. In general, Christians have a bad rep in this world. Too conservative, uptight, closed minded, delusional, judgmental, hypocritical, the list goes on. Sometimes I’m afraid to say, do, or post religious things because I’m worried about what others might think. But then I thought of you, and what you’re doing. And how I can’t even imagine any of your friends judging you for your religious beliefs. You are so cool. Your friends respect you and I do too. I hope your mission is going well and that you come home safely! We miss you.

    Your friend,
    Fern

Anthony is in Mexico on a mission trip – he’s been there for about a year now. One more year to go before he returns!

  • Date Night

It all started with lunch. We usually eat lunch together – his workplace is literally a mile away from my house – and I had become strangely dependent on this midday routine. But for the second day in a row, he went out to eat with his coworkers instead. And I was upset. (Even though I know I shouldn’t be. I’m working on it, ok?)

He texted me after lunch. “What are you doing for dinner though?” (I don’t know.) “Do you want to eat together?” (I didn’t respond.) “Hm???!?!?” (Ok.) “=]”

And at 5:15 he showed up at my door.

“Let’s go some place nice that we haven’t been to in a while.”

After making him wait nearly an hour while I finished up my work and begrudgingly tried to pick a restaurant, we were on our way. Or at least, in the driveway, preparing to leave for Cheesecake Factory. Then Chili’s. And then finally… California Pizza Kitchen in San Jose.

    The wait? 45 minutes. >______<

But it was okay, he needed to buy a new pair of shoes. So we began to walk through the mall, making our way through the crowds in search of a shoe store. Just as we were walking past the Build-A-Bear store, he said to me, “It would be cool if they had a walrus.”

[side note: After watching Toy Story 3, Ryan told me that his favorite childhood toy was a stuffed animal named Wally the walrus. He used to chew on Wally's tusks. I have yet to meet Wally - he's up in the attic.]

“Maybe they do!” I said, darting into the store to look at the toys. “No, they don’t. I already checked. The abominable snowman is pretty cool though,” he said, checking out the furry white creature. I liked Clarice the reindeer. Suddenly he turned to me. “Do you want to get one?”

    Uhhhh YES I wanted to!!!!

I chose the happy hugs teddy, watched him get stuffed, and put a cute little heart inside. We went over to the next station and filled out his birth certificate – his official name is Chet Baker (named after the famous jazz trumpet player). Awful, awful name, in my opinion, but I’m not the one who paid for him! And three minutes later he was rechristened Han Solo. We browsed through the many outfits covering the walls – “Who would want a C3PO outfit??! He was so annoying!!” – and I opted not to get one, at least not yet. But of course he’ll eventually have the Han Solo outfit, since that’s his new persona. lol.

    Photo 3
Here I am with Han Solo RIGHT NOW!!! He makes me so happy. :D

It was really nice to get out of the house, even out of town, and do something different than the usual Netflix dvd at home. We even tried something new at CPK – the chicken lettuce wraps appetizer. It was good. But not as good as my favorite smoothie, the pineapple colada! It is seriously like paradise in a drink. Amazing. I wish I could have that every day.

Whoops, I almost forgot. We DID go home and watch a dvd from Netflix… hahaha. Smoking Aces was pretty good… lots of people died though. And it was kind of unnecessarily complex. Too many characters involved. I would still recommend it because I was impressed with Ryan Renolds and the chaos was entertaining. If you watch it and don’t like it, I will stop giving my opinions on movies because I am already unsure of my skills as a critic. :)

  • It is 12:45 am.

I am sitting at my new desk with a bag of tortilla chips, a block of extra sharp cheddar cheese, and a glass of lemonade. I feel talkative and restless. But at the same time… I don’t feel like doing anything.

My dad probably woke up when he heard me walk downstairs to get my late night snack. He is the lightest sleeper in the world. It makes me feel guilty for opening the fridge past his bedtime. I closed the door so I could crunch on the chips but who knows, the sound probably traveled (travelled?) down the hall and woke him up anyway.

I actually had a good, cohesive paragraph written out in my head before getting to this page, but now that I’m here I lost all of it.

Well… I should be editing photos. Business has been booming! I had shoots on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and today – Saturday. I have five shoots that need to be edited and uploaded online so that my clients can see their proofs. I did finish one gallery tonight so at least now it’s five instead of six. :)

I’ve been working off three computers and two external hard drives. My files are scattered EVERYWHERE. It’s difficult to keep track of where they are when laptops are breaking down faster than I can replace them. Apparently they all worked fine when my dad used them. So I guess it’s my fault. I’m a laptop destroyer and I don’t even know how I do it. The first one has a wide white vertical line near the middle of the screen. The second one straight up died. The third one… its graphic drive started spazzing out, I don’t even know how to explain what happened. Now I’m on the fourth – say hello to my MacBook Pro! Hello, MacBook Pro. I’ve used macs before and they’re pretty darn cool, but this doesn’t feel like home. I guess it will take a while to get used to.

And now it is 12:56 am and I can’t believe how serious I sound in this blog post. I’m in a weird mood. I have been in a weird mood.

    To sum it up:
    1. When I move out I will have the freedom to leave my room past midnight.
    2. I have five photo shoots to edit.
    3. I am on my fourth laptop and I wish I could hire someone to consolidate and organize my files.

    The end! :)

  • lololol

  • “Why is it so cold in the morning?”

Last night my cousin, her husband and their six year old daughter arrived at my house! They went on a road trip to Disneyland, Legoland and SeaWorld and now they’re in the Bay Area for a few days to visit before going back to Malaysia. Does anyone remember Ashley? :) I spent a lot of time with her when I went to Malaysia in February for Chinese New Year. She’s been so hyper, showing me all the new toys she got at Disneyland, drawing me pictures, trying to pet my cat… hahaha. She was jetlagged for a week when they first came to America, but Disneyland helped her stay awake during the day! lol. I wish I could have been there with them (even though I JUST went to Disney World). I go to Disneyland at least once a year but it’s so much more meaningful for her. As a little kid, she appreciates so many things that I wouldn’t even bother looking at. Then again, it’s awesome when our interests coincide. Like Disney’s Animation Studio! She loved it! Her parents took her twice and she learned how to draw Pluto and Donald. :)

These are from my cousin’s iphone…

They were all so thankful to eat my mom’s home cooked Chinese food last night lol!

Model pose! Can’t wait to take pics of her today hehe.

Surprisingly enough, her favorite character isn’t a Disney princess.. it’s BUZZ LIGHTYEAR. She absolutely loved the Astro Blasters Ride.

    The family with Minnie Mouse.

Our family has been joking that after Disneyland, nothing can compare. Especially in our quiet, suburban hometown. We’re going sightseeing in San Francisco today so that will be fun!

Oh yeah, I helped them make a video call on Skype to our family back in Penang. My cousin’s mom asked Ashley – “Have you tried Taco Bell yet?!?!?” HAHAHAHA. I love Taco Bell. I just had it a few days ago… ^.^

The title is a quote from Ashley. She says the cutest things. I’m glad I get to be a part of her first ever trip to California!

  • Inspiration

So you know how your facebook profile has a little box on the left hand side that shows a random handful of your friends? This morning when I glanced at it, I happened to see this guy that I met freshman year of college. He was in my residence hall, on the same floor… one of the many people who would invite me to go out drinking but eventually stopped asking (because I always said no HAHA). They were a fun group, and I’m glad they were respectful of my choices. But that’s another story.

His profile picture featured him posing in front of the mirror in his underwear. I laughed to myself. Who does this guy think he is? Some hot shot fashion model? Then I read the caption. “For those of you who may know what I’ve been doing, this is 8 months in.” There was a link to a video…

It’s funny that I’m posting this because I’m not a guy and I don’t have any plans on losing weight. But… WOW. Is that not inspiring? I know that hard work pays off but sometimes I forget just how miraculous the results can be if you really set your mind to it. Cheesy, but true.

    Go Shant!!!!!
