  • It's Just Not the Same...

Ever since I was a kid, I was resistant to change. When I came home from school and saw a new appliance or piece of furniture, I would pout that my parents didn't warn me ahead of time or ask for my opinion. In high school when I had the option of upgrading to a new cell phone, I chose to buy the exact same phone again. Of course this doesn't apply to every situation of my life (because that would be absurd!)... but this stubborn part of me emerges at the most random times...

I switched from a PC to a Mac fairly recently. But to tell the truth I hadn't REALLY made the move yet. I've got my Macbook Pro all set up with my beautiful beast of a monitor (Christmas present from Ryan, thank youuuu even though you never read this) but it's all a facade. I'll use the Mac for the fun and easy stuff like email and KoL and facebook. When it comes down to the important stuff, I go right back to my broken Dell with the line cutting the screen into uneven halves.

Now that my PC is currently showing a pretty deep blue pattern of stripes with the phrase ***Hardware Malfunction*** at the top of the screen, I've been forced to use the Mac for photo editing.

I know it will take time to get used to, but it seems like I'm the only one in the world who has this problem. I feel like I need a pair of glasses to see the photos clearly. The minute details and nuances in color and light that I loved on my PC seem to have vanished here. All the articles and sources I find online say that Macs are better for photo editing and display sharper photos - here I am thinking the exact opposite.

Maybe it was the resolution of my screen. Maybe it's the difference in gamma (Macs have a brighter gamma by default).

Maybe I'm just a cranky old grump who wants things to stay the same no matter what.

By the way, I HATE the ugly truth that no matter how much time I spend perfecting the colors and lighting on a photo, it still has the potential to look horrifically out of whack on another person's monitor. I remember the first time this dawned on me, at least in relation to my photos. I had just perfected a masterpiece and happened to view it on another computer. It was totally off. I went back to my own computer and changed it again so it would look right on the other screen. But there was no point... it would look different on every single person's screen.

It was like my entire sense of reality had been pulled out from beneath me. What was real and perfect on my monitor... did not exist elsewhere. (I was devastated.)

Footnote: I'm hoping that calibrating both my Macbook and external monitor screens will help ease my transition!

  • Man, I don't know if I'd be able to switch from PC to Mac. It wouldn't be that difficult, but I'm just so used to using PCs. Maybe I'll make the switch in the future since I already have an iTouch and I'll probably get an iPhone now that Verizon will be selling it. WEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  • The monitor, video card, drivers, settings, etc too many factors that can cause deviation on the color.

You can never leave the PC world. All hail Bill Gates. jk

  • i've lost who you are on KOL :( , it deleted the message i had from you. send me a message! whoosh1 :D .

im looking forward to attacking you >:D bwahahahhaa.

  • welcome, welcome!

i've never looked back since i've switched to a mac (ha that rhymed..)
honestly, the screen and all that is brighter and whatnot but i didn't get a mac just to edit photos..i could already do that on my pc. i got a mac for everything else it could do as well. the whole user interface promotes organization and multitasking and does it really well. applications are simple and intuitive and easy on the eyes. macs are a great example of how a good computer requires good software AND good hardware.
    /end mac fanboy rant :)

  • Yeah, I could imagine perfecting a photo to the nth degree and making it a masterpiece, then going on another computer and it's like "hey what happened"? Maybe you should only look and show your work on your laptop, LOL.

My roomie when I lived in SF was a graphic designer. He had tons of friends that were graphic designers and photographers. And they all had Macs. I just assumed if you were doing anything in design or photography you'd have a Mac.

  • @fLiPgUy31O - Yeah, I've used Macs enough in the past to have a pretty good understanding of the differences... but there are things to get used to. And about the iphone, I'll be happy to make the switch in February!!! I've played with Ryan's so many times that I would be okay getting a new phone this time. :D

    @pika_whoosh - Message sent!

@ch0w - lol that sounded like a rap. You ARE a fanboy, geez. Hahahaha. I'm all for the interface and intuitive programs. They're pretty cool.

@misuterihomme - But not "hey what happened", more like "OMG WHY DOESN'T IT LOOK RIGHT??!!?!?" lol.

Yeah everyone says that artsy people use Macs... I was the exception... until now. I feel like a lame conformist. -____-

  • hahah... I can never get used to MAC and I'm in IT.  =P

  • Pft, I'm a 3D Visual Artist and hell shall freeze the day I switch over to a Mac to disrupt my workflow lol.

  • hardware problems are the worst! You can't just download a new driver to fix it. I hope you can get back on your PC soon!

  • That's what we were taught in our Graphic Design class ... to type CMYK codes manually to get the exact color because colors are different on different monitors. I don't know what to do about the photos though. I also had the same problem when I edited photos on my Laptop. It was very bright so I made some photos dark. But on my office computer, they look so dark that we couldn't even make out whose face anymore.

I have to say that we have another thing in common. I also hate changes.

  • @itcouldbeYOU - @Kiwigummy - @wingtrung - Hahaha thanks guys, now I don't feel so bad for clinging to my PC... :)

@kyalzinlay - Ohh that's cool about typing in the codes. I wish all monitors in the world displayed images exactly the same. :( We have so many things in common!!!!
